Fixing a rail shape after you have finished the shape.

You should never be afraid to fix a rail that does not feel right. There are many times where you come back the next day and decide that you hate your rail but are too afraid to fix it. Here is the simple way to make it right.

Keep in mind that this shape was made to cut up for training clips but I decided to upload the entire shape start to finish since it is not completely boring to watch. 😉 If it was a customer's board or shop board I would have spent 5 more minutes measuring and 10 more minutes getting the finish perfect. A typical handshape should take 1 hour to do properly.

Просмотров 4,7 тыс.4 года назад
If you want to shape freestyle there are a few rules that you should follow to maximize your success. Most blanks are designed to be shaped from the bottom to the deck so it is best to do most of your shaping off the bottom. Look at it this way and the flow should naturally fall into place just like the blank designer planned.

The #1 problem for beginner to intermediate shapers is the template. Nothing can make your shaping harder or easier like the template can because it is the one part that interacts with every other part of the shape. A bad template screams "beginner" but the good news is that perfect templates are available to everyone and are so easy to make that there should be no excuse. www.kazumakinoshitasu...

Hey Matt, you’re a wealth of knowledge. I hope you don’t mind a question for a vid you made long time ago. If I observed correctly, you attacked the bottom and deck rails differently (bottom banding outward to rail, deck banding inward to stringer), is there a reason for that? I’m assuming those are 50/50 rails, why not do the bands in the same sequence? Thank you in advance!

If I was doing a remake of “The Karate Kid” I’d have you as Mr. Miyagi showing Daniel the proper moves with your shaping strokes, instead of “wax on, wax off.” Speed it up to 2x and it almost balletic. Like you’re shaping flow into it, which I guess you are in a way.

Finally found this after lots of deep dive in the interwebs! Thanks for sharing. Still a little bit confused as to what you are pressing/bending with the screw driver… is it the teeth on the index plate that you push up outa the way? Or is it the metal slide that extends out of the opening that tells you what depth you’re at that gets bent? I don’t want to accidentally damage anything I can’t undo, but there’s no clear video anywhere that shows how to make this crucial mod. Any info detailing what you’re bending would be appreciated! Thanks Matt 🙏🏼

I watched twice so don't think I missed it but how to mark out the transition of the corner radius which on my boards is about 1/64th or less along the rail near the fins, and transitioning up to an inch or more of radius in the middle and then of course decreasing again but never as hard as a 64th toward the nose?

Super! I'm currently making a handful of boards after only ever having made a dozen, the last one being 30 yrs ago. 2 days ago I had to strip a lam off because it kicked before I had the rails wet out and down (I misread the uv directions by a factor of x10 haha). I did ok with my next try last night, but since one of the shapes is in EPS foam, I'm gonna have your heart attack unless I can double speed my game. Your method looks like a real viable alternative and I will try it on the other boards first (the epoxy last). However, since I'm double glassing the decks: How does this method work for 2 layers - just paint it a bit thicker initially? Thanks so much for this vid!

    • @kazumasurfboards
